Students can join Air Force ROTC as freshmen or sophomores. This means as long as a student has at least six semesters remaining in their education until they earn their bachelor's degree, they can enroll! Whether you're a new freshman or a senior on the verge of graduating and commissioning, AFROTC consists of two components: Aerospace Studies and Leadership Lab. The curriculum for these courses and their learning objectives are standardized and provided by Headquarters AFROTC to be taught at each detachment.

Aerospace Studies covers a wide range of topics, including leadership, followership, teamwork fundamentals, problem solving, Air Force and Space Force history, and national security studies, just to name a few. As a freshman and sophomore this involves taking one 1-credit course per semester which is accomplished through a one hour in-class lecture each week. As a junior and senior this evolves into one 3-credit course per semester which is accomplished through three lecture hours per week.

Leadership Lab is an active, hands-on learning environment designed for cadets to practice the leadership, followership, and teamwork concepts they learn about in their academics. At Detachment 420, this course is accomplished through three physical training sessions per week (cadets are required to attend two of the three sessions offered) and Leadership Lab one morning per week for 1.5-2 hours. Leadership Lab is 1 credit per semester for freshmen and sophomores and 2 credits per semester for juniors and seniors.

A unique element of AFROTC is that all cadets are organized into a Cadet Wing, consisting of the General Military Course (GMC) and Professional Officer Course (POC). GMC cadets are freshmen and sophomores who have not completed Field Training. POC cadets are juniors and seniors who have completed Field Training. POC cadets hold leadership positions within the Cadet Wing structure and are responsible for providing hands-on training for the GMC during Leadership Lab. Detachment cadre, who are active duty Airmen or Guardians, provide mentorship, guidance, and supervision of this training and ensure required objectives are met for all cadets.
